CGSB 131.10 Certification

The Canadian Standard for Translation Services CAN CGSB 131.10 - 2008 established and defined the requirements for the provision of translation services by translation service providers (translation agencies and translators).

CGSB 131.10 is a modified version of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) standard ISO 17100 Translation Services.  Variances in wording and content with ISO 17100 were intended to reflect the Canadian perspective.

The standard specifies the requirements for the provision of translation services by the translation service provider (TSP).

There are three key points common to all standards:

  • Select and monitor your human resources with care.

  • Come to an agreement on your project specifications before translation begins.

  • Follow the specifications at every step of the project.

The CGSB 131.10 standards review defines a process and quality framework for the following, translator resources,  Quality Management System,  Client-TSP interaction, Project Management Procedures, and the translation process.

The major difference between CGSB 131.10 and ISO 17100 is that the ISO standard requires the second translator to provide the revising and proofreading of a document. As an example, a translation conforming to ISO 17100 is performed by two independent translators. One performs the initial translation while another revises the text, comparing source and target languages for meaning, style, grammar and other aspects. However good a single translator may be, once an error has crept in it may be impossible for the same person to see it – a second pair of eyes exposes mistakes. This also allows a finer treatment of the many different ways in which a single text can be translated. Translator and reviser can discuss the possibilities and agree on the optimal solution for the text in question depending on the client and the intended reading audience.

Language Marketplace is certified to both standards but applies the tougher criteria of ISO 17100 to all projects. We are a Canadian company with experience and a reputation you can trust!
